Folding the United States Flag

  1. Start in a position where you and one of your flag folding partners are holding the American flag at your waist so the flag is parallel to the ground. Your other two partners should stand on either side of the flag. The flag should be held tightly so that the flag itself is tight while you fold it. The bearer of the flag will hold the Union section, or the stars, in his or her left hand.
  2. The next step is to fold the bottom half of the striped section lengthwise over the field of stars. Make sure you continue to hold the bottom of the flag and the top edges of the flag securely.
  3. Again, fold the flag lengthwise and keep the blue field on the outside.
  4. To make the triangle fold, bring the striped corner of the folded edge to meet the top (or open) edge of the flag. This part of the folding should always be done from the right to the left.
  5. Next, flip the outer point inside, keeping it parallel to the open edge, to form a second triangle.
  6. Continue the triangular folding until the entire flag is folded.
  7. Once the folding is complete, you should only be able to see the blue field of stars.
Folding Service or Military Flags
  • You only need two people to fold a service or military flag properly. In this case, you and another person should hold the flag at your waist and fold it in half two times in a lengthwise fashion.
  • Finally, fold the flag again in half twice from end to end.
